BRIGHTON – The Pemayetv Emahakv Charter School varsity volleyball team made sure its eighth grade celebration night and perfect record weren’t spoiled by West Glades Middle School.

The Seminoles remained undefeated against fellow middle school teams this season with a 2-0 sweep against West Glades on Oct. 12 in Brighton. The Seminoles will try to stamp an exclamation point on their season when they host the six-school Around the Lake playoff tournament Saturday. The single-loss elimination tournament with varsity and junior varsity teams is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.

Before facing West Glades, PECS’s eighth graders from the varsity and junior varsity teams were honored. The players were accompanied by family members during a ceremony. Teammates presented them with gift baskets. The players honored were Bailey Bowers, Jaliyah Kroeplin and Delilah Young from the JV team and Harmany Urbina, Joleyne Nunez, Tehya Nunez, Hannah Platt and Ila Trueblood from varsity.

“They’re awesome; they’re wonderful. They are very hardworking,” varsity coach Elizabeth Tauchen said. “I was blessed with an awesome group.”

The JV started the night with a 2-0 win. Both sets were close and lengthy. The scores were 27-25 and 29-27.

The varsity didn’t need overtime to seal its shutout victory. The scores were 25-13 and 25-12. In game one, the Seminoles received aces from Tehya Nunez, Joleyne Nunez and Ila Trueblood. Kills came from Trueblood and Harmany Urbina.

The team’s strong serving continued early in game two behind aces from Trueblood and Azriah Washington. When PECS found itself in the unfamiliar position of trailing at 8-7, Tauchen called a timeout. The brief break and talk turned things around as PECS went on an 18-4 run to finish the sweep. Three consecutive aces from Melaine Bonilla and one from Hannah Platt provided a spark for the Seminoles.
