A new hip-hop inspired mural unveiled Oct. 5 on New York’s Lower East Side was commissioned by Hard Rock Hotel New York in partnership with the mayor’s office and LISA Project NYC.

“Posse in Effect” was created by artist Shepard Fairey as part of a public art project that celebrates 50 years of the hip-hop music genre. The mural depicts an iconic image of the Beastie Boys, a hip-hop group that popularized the genre and also called New York City their home.

“Posse in Effect” is located at the intersection of East 14th Street and Avenue A, about three miles from the Hard Rock Hotel New York. The mural portrays a photo taken of the group by Glen E. Friedman, who is known as a pioneer of skate, punk, and hip-hop photography.

Officials expect to unveil 50 murals throughout five boroughs in all, a news release said.

“Hip-hop is more than just music, it is a global movement that changed the world forever,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams, said in the release. “Beyond the rhymes and raps, street art was a pivotal pillar in the early days of hip-hop, giving young people an outlet to express themselves.”

“We are proud to partner with LISA Project NYC and the Office of The Mayor, who are committed to providing access to the arts for the local community, while celebrating the change makers who shaped hip-hop over the past 50 years,” Keith Sheldon, president of entertainment for Hard Rock International, said in the release. “Music is the foundation that Hard Rock International was built on, and we are thrilled to continue making our mark within the city and play a part in honoring the Beastie Boys for decades to come with Shepard Fairey’s mural.”

“Art and entertainment is in our DNA at Hard Rock and especially at Hard Rock Hotel New York here in the culture capital of the world,” David Salcfas, general manager at Hard Rock Hotel New York, said in the release. “We’re forever grateful for the opportunity to leave a lasting impression for New Yorkers with the creation of this mural and look forward to the powerful conversation that this piece evokes.”

LISA Project NYC is a public art charity that supports street, graffiti and contemporary art murals in urban spaces. Hard Rock Hotel New York, which opened in 2022, is located at 159 W 48th Street in Midtown Manhattan. The Seminole Tribe is the parent entity of Hard Rock International. More is at hardrock.com.
